In elementary school, your children take the same classes as all the other kids. However, as they grow older, they will want to pursue subjects that are best for them. At the moment, let us take a close and detailed look at six ways to convert your children to STEM education.
1. Build Upon Interests
To start things off, build upon your child’s current interests. If they love watching airplanes at the airport, make a connection to engineering and the mathematics behind it all. If they are fond of standing underneath the ceiling fan, ask them how wind currents blow through your home. While you don’t want to force STEM upon your children, it doesn’t hurt to explain its relevance to their favorite interests. STEM education doesn’t only have to take place in school. At home, your children probably love watching videos on Youtube for a good laugh. In between their usual videos, recommend some STEM videos that can teach them a thing or two. Fortunately, these videos can be highly entertaining on their own, so there’s a good chance that your children will flip from one to another on their own accord.
4. STEM Modeling
Modeling is another way to visualize STEM on a regular basis. For example, you might look into stream tables to create miniature streams in the comfort of your own home. Children love floating small pebbles and toys down these streams and watching the way they interact with the water. These tables are easy to maintain and clean up. They are very accurate simulations of the real world, and on your next vacation, make sure to point out streams in the countryside.
5. Incorporate STEM Daily
As discussed above, there are so many ways to incorporate STEM into your child’s daily life. In the car, give them some STEM trivia cards to think about. They’ll be reciting scientific facts all the way home. Remember, the idea isn’t to have them memorize all these statistics. It’s more about piquing their interest and nudging them toward STEM classes in the future.
6. Go Outside
Last but not least, take your children outside whenever possible. As you might imagine, STEM takes place in the real world. There are so many applications to architecture and nature wherever you look. As you walk through downtown, point out geometric shapes and angles. As you take a hike through a forest, ask them to identify certain critters and plants. There’s only so much that you can learn through a textbook; engaging them in the real world is a great way to complement STEM education.
