This visit will underline Trump’s “Indo-Pacific” policy: Analysis

Some history: Trump is the fourth consecutive US president to visit India after Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Before that presidential visits were hard to come by — Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter came to India but there were long dry spells in between. The Cold War made it difficult for the White House to find time for India.

But now the dynamics are different. Today both India and the US recognise each other’s strategic importance because of a third party — China. India knows China only too well and Americans are now wide awake to the Chinese threat as their universities, labs, high schools, trade associations and defence labs get penetrated with moles and money. India and the US find more agreement on geopolitics these days than before: the fancy term is strategic convergence. Basically, birds of a feather (democracies) must flock together. That is what the US, India, Japan and Australia are doing. Trump’s “Indo-Pacific” policy is all about that and his visit will underline it. ( ET’s Seema Sirohi in Washington)

Modi Trump Summit: The atmosphere is all charged up at Ahmedabad’s Motera Stadium

There won’t be an iota of difference in the lives of the poor and middle-class people in India due to Trump’s visit. Then where is the question of people being appreciative or enthusiastic of his tour.

Trump’s visit important to counter Asia Pacific Axis of China: Defence expert

Defence Expert PK Sehgal tells ANI that Donald Trump’s visit is “exceedingly important” for both countries to counter Asia Pacific Axis of China. “There are very many takeoffs that are going to take place, one of the major points of agenda would be mega defense deals, second is counter-terrorism and security and the third aspect would be Indo-Pacific, countering the Asia Pacific Axis of China, and fourthly is trade and energy security,” he says.

President Trump and PM Modi have read each other right: Analysis

Donald Trump loves rallies, spectacle and everything that goes with a good “tamasha.” India can give him a grand tamasha and then some. He talked fondly about his visit to China in 2017 for days and the royal treatment he received. He was clearly impressed. Can “Namaste Trump” create the magic? And swing some Indian American votes Trump’s way in the bargain? If he stands by Modi, Modi’s supporters in the US may too stand by him too. At least that’s the hope. Trump’s political managers are looking to sway the Indian American community. Both Modi and Trump have read each other right. When Trump trolls India — calling India the “tariff king” — Modi lets it slide. Why, because he has bigger fish to fry with the United States — more technology, more defence equipment and yes, also more trade with or without a deal. ( ET’s Seema Sirohi from Washington.)

Why CM Kejriwal was not invited to Melania Trump’s Delhi school event

Tomorrow, First Lady Melania Trump is visiting a Delhi government school and there has been a controversy over the fact that Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal was not invited. This was the response of the US Embassy in India: “While US Embassy had no objection to the presence of CM and Deputy CM, we appreciate their recognition that this isn’t a political event& that it’s best to ensure focus is on education, school, and students”. ( ET’s Manu Pubby reports from New Delhi)

This visit underlines India’s importance for Trump: Analysis

Important points to remember about President Donald Trump’s visit: It’s a stand-alone visit, meaning that he is not going to Pakistan. He is undertaking the visit despite little prospect of a trade deal materialising when trade is something close to his heart. The fact that three family members are coming adds to the visit. The presence of two Indian American officials — FCC Chairman Ajit Pai and Senior Director for Counterterrorism Kash Patel — in the delegation gives added dimension to the India connection. It is an election year in the United States but Trump has taken the time to go half way across to India.
The visit underlines India’s importance and Trump’s personal regard for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, writes ET’s Seema Sirohi from Washington.

Indian diaspora could be target market for Trump’s political donations: foreign policy expert

The relatively affluent Indian diaspora in the United States could be a great target market for Donald Trump to garner political donations for the upcoming presidential polls, foreign policy expert Richard Rossow told ANI. “In terms of political potential political donations Indian American diaspora could be a great target market for Donald Trump, it would not be a prime market but a good secondary one…The Indian diaspora here in the United States is a growing community with almost 4 million of them now relatively affluent,” Rossow, who is of the CSIS Wadhwani Chair in US-India Policy Studies, said.

It is not clear what India will gain from this. India will see ‘Namaste Trump’. Modi ji is spending crores of rupees to make Trump happy. Trump said Modi ji promised him 10 million people who will welcome US President. What is the need for this?
