Several protests, led by students, have taken place in Delhi against the Citizenship Act.

Four buses were set on fire by a large number of people and two fire officials were injured in stone-pelting as the protests against the newly enacted Citizenship Act entered the third day in the national capital on Sunday. Locals of the Sarai Julema in the Jamia Nagar area clashed with police. The trouble began when organisers of a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019, turned violent. The situation turned critical when a bus was burned by the protestors and police got into action. A photographer was injured in the stone-pelting that took place during the confrontation between protestors and police. Huge traffic snarls were experienced throughout the south Delhi area, from Ashram to Friends Colony to Kalindi Kunj. Police diverted traffic from the vicinity as pitched battles continued. For over an hour Mathura Road opposite New Friends Colony’s both carriageways were blocked by the demonstrator. and Delhi Traffic Police tweeted that all movement was closed from Okhla Underpass to Sarita Vihar due to the demonstration.

The protesters and cops clashed near the main gate of the Aligarh Muslim University as policemen used tear gas and water cannons to try and disperse the crowd. The students were leaving the university campus to take out a procession in solidarity with the Jamia students.

Petrol was taken out of two-wheelers parked on the roadside and used to set fire to three buses, an eyewitness of this evening’s violence in Delhi has told NDTV. The hour-long pitched battle outside a posh colony between the police and a mob was the culmination of a protest march against the new citizenship law. By the end of it, three buses were set ablaze, a fire tender was damaged and two firemen were injured and the police had used batons and tear gas on the mob.

The BJP has alleged that Sunday’s violence in South Delhi area was perpetrated by the Aam Admi Party (AAP) and demanded that they stop “provoking people”. BJP Delhi Chief Manoj Tiwari, in a tweet, said that an AAP MLA was “provoking” the public and called Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal a “traitor”. “AAP MLA is provoking people at the behest of Arvind Kejriwal.
Two firemen were injured and one fire engine was damaged in the protests. Metro operations – Jamia Millia Islamia University is on the city’s Magenta Line – were affected, with the entry and exit gates of Sukhdev Vihar Station, Jamia Millia Islamia, Okhla Vihar and Jasola Vihar Shaheen Bagh, as well as Gate No.3 of the Ashram Station, closed.

Najma Akhtar, the Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, has expressed concern over the safety and security of the students and asked those who left the campus to return.
Violence broke out in Delhi this evening as students from the Jamia Millia Islamia gathered to protest the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act, or CAA. Delhi Police and protesters engaged in a pitched battle in a posh South Delhi neighbourhood with cops using tear gas and resorting to lathi-charges after protesters broke cars and set at least three buses on fire. The cops have taken momentary control of the area, which now resembles a war zone, and have deployed in large numbers to ensure security.
Atul Bora, President of Asom Gana Parishad, has said that the party has not taken a decision on filing a petition against the Citizenship Law.
“We are discussing, some of our friends will go to Delhi, we have not decided yet,” he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
The curfew in Shillong has been relaxed from 6 am to 7 pm.
The curfew was relaxed for 13 hours in areas under the jurisdictions of Sadar and Lumdiengiri police stations, some officials told news agency PTI.
In view of the prevailing law and order situation in the curfew-bound areas, the District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills, M W Nongbri, has relaxed the curfew till 7 pm, they said.
Curfew will be reimposed in these areas from 7 pm on Sunday till further orders, a statement issued by the district administration said.
SMS and mobile internet services have been withdrawn for 48 hours since 5pm on Saturday, an official said.
Banks and educational institutions have been shut since December 11 and the North Eastern Hill University has also postponed all examinations to February 2020.

The protesters felled trees and burnt tyres to obstruct key national and state highways on Sunday, IANS reports.
The protesters even started a ‘picnic’ on the National Highway 34 after putting up a roadblock, it adds.
At Amdanga in 24 Parganas district, protesters staged a demonstration by felling a tree and torching tyres on the road at Sonadanga and Dhankal on National Highway 34.

The curfew was also relaxed from 7 am to 4 pm in Dibrugarh west, Naharkatia, Tenughat and some other places in the district from 7 am to 4 pm.
Curfew was relaxed from 7 am to 4 pm in Guwahati. Long queues were seen outside shops at several places, including Dispur, Uzan Bazar, Chandmari, Silpukhuri and Zoo Road in Guwahati town.
