Newspaper headlines: Flack’s boyfriend’s heartache and ‘tough’ trade talks
Many of the papers continue to focus on the fall-out from the death of ex-Love Island host Caroline Flack, who was found at her north London home after taking her own life. Her “devastated” boyfriend, Lewis Burton, posted an image of the couple and said his heart was “broken”, the Metro reports.
The Daily Star reports that Burton has vowed to get “all the answers” following his partner’s death. The tennis player promised he would make Flack “proud” after it emerged an ambulance crew assessed the star at her home the day before she killed herself, says the paper.
Flack had previously warned she would take her own life, according to the Daily Mail. The paper reports that the 40-year-old had been taking anti-depressants and was “terrified” at the prospect of her upcoming trial.
The Daily Mirror also features an image of Flack on its front page, but its lead story is on Storm Dennis battering large parts of Britain that were already reeling from the havoc caused by last weekend’s Storm Ciara. The paper says homes and businesses were hit in what it calls the worst deluge in recent years.
The i notes that Dennis set a record for flood alerts. Hundreds had to be rescued after a month’s worth of rain fell in two days, the paper says.
The Times leads on a warning from France that trade talks between the UK and EU will turn nasty. Jean-Yves Le Drian, the French foreign minister, said negotiators were likely to “rip each other apart”, with the two sides expected to fight particularly hard over fishing rights.
“EU threat of Brexit trade bloodbath” is the headline on the front of the Daily Express. The paper notes that Mr Le Drian’s warning of a bitter trade battle between both sides came as Boris Johnson’s chief negotiator heads to Brussels later.
The closure of day centres has led to dementia sufferers being “dumped” in accident and emergency departments, according to an investigation by the Daily Telegraph. The paper says it has discovered that 32 of the day care services have closed in three years, including 20 in the last year alone, coinciding with a sharp rise in dementia patients arriving in hospital via A&E.
A doctor who worked at the same private healthcare firm as the rogue breast surgeon Ian Paterson has been accused of subjecting scores of his patients to unnecessary operations, the Guardian reports. The paper says Michael Walsh, a shoulder surgeon, was sacked by Spire Healthcare, which reported him to the General Medical Council, after numerous patients and some of his colleagues raised concerns about his work.
The head of SoftBank’s $100bn Vision Fund has lined up billions of dollars of outside investment for a new hedge fund-style vehicle, the Financial Times reports. The paper says the move threatens to escalate tensions at the world’s biggest tech investor.
