NEW DELHI: The ministry of tourism clarified that it has not issued any letter on closing of hotels and restaurants till October 2020 due to the coronavirus outbreak, as purported in a WhatsApp message doing the rounds. The ministry said the message was false and that it has lodged a complaint in this matter with the cyber-crime unit of the Mumbai police. Anybody found to be circulating, publishing or spreading the fake news would be held liable under applicable laws.“The respective authorities are empowered to take suitable action against such individuals including but not limited to initiation of criminal proceedings under relevant laws,” the ministry said on Wednesday. The fake letter circulating on WhatsApp states that hotels, restaurants and resorts all over India will remain closed till October 15 due to the coronavirus outbreak and that this order had come from the tourism department. The ministry stated that it had already issued denials on social media platforms and the Press Information Bureau’s fact-checking unit had also called the message fake a few days ago, but the message continues to circulate.
