Kejriwal asks AAP volunteers not to burst crackers during victory celebrations

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has asked AAP volunteers not to burst firecrackers during victory celebrations to prevent air pollution.Other preparations to celebrate the victory, including ordering sweets and namkeens, are underway at the party headquarters in ITO, PTI quoted party officials as saying.

in 2015, AAP won by a landslide

In 2015, the AAP and the BJP had won 67 and three seats respectively in the 70-seat Assembly. Their corresponding vote share was 54.3 and 32.3 per cent. The Congress drew a blank.

What the Exit polls said

  • The India Today-Axis poll forecast 59-68 seats for the AAP and 2-11 for the BJP
  • ABP-CVoter put the Delhi’s ruling party’s tally at anywhere between 49 and 63 and that of BJP between five to 19.
  • Times Now-Ipsos exit poll predicted that Kejriwal will retain power with the AAP winning 47 seats against 23 for the BJP.
  • Republic-Jan ki Baat survey gave the AAP 48-61 seats and the BJP 9-21 seats.
  • All the exit polls predicted a near total washout for the Congress.

Why AAP questioned the EC

There was a controversy over the polling in the evening. Polling registered a big spike in the last two hours. A day after polling ended, the final polling tally wasn’t out. AAP questioned the delay, but the EC clarified that it was crosschecking all sources to get the right final figure.

BJP leaders have maintained that the exit poll results that predicted its defeat in the Delhi polls will “fail” as the surveys did not take into account the votes polled in the evening.

We are all geared up for the counting and elaborate security arrangements have been put in place. The exercise will be carried out as per the laid-down procedures of the Election Commission.

AAP keeps guard outside EVM strongrooms

Tight security arrangements have been put in place at various centres where the counting of votes will be done.

The counting centres are located at CWG Sports Complex in East Delhi, NSIT Dwarka in West Delhi, Meerabai Institute of Technology and G B Pant Institute of Technology in Southeast Delhi, Sir CV Raman ITI, Dheerpur in Central Delhi, and Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Bawana in North Delhi, among other places.

Polling was held on February 8, sealing the fate of 672 candidates — 593 men and 79 women. Nearly 24 hours after the polling ended, the Election Commission announced that the final voter turnout was 62.59 per cent, five per cent less than 2015.

Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party , the BJP and the Congress were the main parties in the election, although the fight was mostly between AAP and BJP. Most exit polls have given AAP an easy win, but then what happens today is what really matters.

Will Arvind Kejriwal get another term as chief minister of Delhi? We will know that in a few hours from now as votes are counted in the Delhi assembly elections.
