MG Motor India has announced that the British actor Benedict Cumberbatch will endorse its upcoming electric car: the MG ZS EV. The company’s MD Rajeev Chaba speaks on the rationale behind the decision to rope in Cumberbatch for their second car in India. Edited excerpts:


What is the reason behind your continued association with Benedict Cumberbatch for MG’s second car in India as well?

We are extremely proud to re-unite with Benedict Cumberbatch, who, since childhood has grown up seeing and reading about MG. The announcement comes as a further extension of the ongoing association between two British icons. With the MG brand set to drive into the future with the pure electric ZS SUV, we remain committed to offering environment friendly mobility solutions to India and are glad to have Benedict fuel the start of the change in India.

MG India’s association with the acclaimed British actor also builds from the shared values and beliefs where both endorse community-led causes like diversity. As we all know, the British actor has been known for promoting gender equality and ‘diversity across the board’ within the global entertainment industry. He has also many a times demonstrated his focus on the humanitarian crisis is known for adopting cruelty free fashion.

What is the focus of MG’s new campaign?

Our latest campaign featuring Benedict Cumberbatch, #ChangeWhatYouCan, aims to ignite an EV revolution in India which is the need of the hour. The campaign calls upon Indians to champion the protection of the environment through EV adoption and lay the foundation for a positive societal change.

What are the concepts around which the campaign revolves?

Revolving around the concepts of green mobility and societal change, the campaign’s title encapsulates its core proposition: making personal changes that contribute to a large-scale transformation. Benedict’s powerful narration stresses the need for a change in existing mindsets and how, one person at a time, with these little changes, can create a powerful impact on society.

How does the new campaign resonate with MG India’s values?

#ChangeWhatYouCan reaffirms MG Motor India’s commitment to the betterment of communities and the environment. The carmaker has already launched several initiatives to raise EV awareness amongst Indian consumers, in addition to partnering with key players in the global EV charging landscape to bolster the country’s EV charging ecosystem. Through the latest campaign, it aims to further encourage EV adoption and catalyse a revolution that has been brewing for some time.

What is your assessment of the potential of a product like the MG ZS EV in India?

MG ZS EV, the pure electric SUV from MG’s global stable has seen robust demand from customers in the UK, Thailand and other markets. It is part of our commitment to promote environmentally friendly mobility in India. We realize there is a need to become a catalyst for change and we are happy to do so with the MG ZS EV. The car will be unveiled in India in December 2019.
