Innings ends
Ross Taylor completes his half-century in the last over of the innings as NZ had three batsmen who went past the fifty run mark. Colin Munro, Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson slam respective fifties as New Zealand end innings at 203/5. Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja picked one wicket each Shami went wicketless.
Injury concerns for Bumrah
After bowling the second delivery off the last over, Bumrah is down on the ground wincing in pain. Replays showed that India pacer had turned his ankle after bowling the delivery. Good news for India is that he is back on his feet and will complete his over.
Good over for NZ
Mohammed Shami finishes his full quota of 4 over and ends with 53/0. His last over goes for 9 runs as New Zealand have entered the 190s. They will want to go past the 200-run mark to have the mental advantage of scoring at least 200.
Kiwis lose half their side
Jasprit Bumrah bowled an excellent over and he was rewarded for it with a wicket. Seifert hit Bumrah’s delivery straight into the hands of Iyer at long-on. Kiws have lost half their side now with just two overs left in the innings.
Fifty and out
Kane Williamson brings up his half century by slamming three boundaries off four Chahal deliveries. He went past the 50-run mark off just 25 deliveries. But then he top-edged a delivery and Kohli took an easy catch at point. Williamson departs for 51 as Kiwis lose their fourth wicket.
Shami goes for 22 in one over
Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson simply tear apart Shami as they bludgeons him for 22 runs in the over. Williamson started with a boundary and then, Taylor went four, six and six to put the pressure back on the visitors. New Zealand have roared past 150-run mark.
Four and SIX
Ross Taylor hits two glorious shots as New Zealand have issued a stunning counter-attack. The first he played a paddle sweep with reverse bat for a four and they hit a jaw dropping sweep shot as the ball sailed into the top tier. India ned to break this stand.
Poor fielding from Chahal
Kane Williamson hit a Shivam Dube delivery in the air towards mid wicket and it sailed over fielder Chahal’s head for a six. Replays showed that Chahal was standing way inside the ropes and had he been just next to the boundary, it would have been a regulation catch. Chahal apologetically looks towards the bowler and skipper who aren’t impressed.
Stat attack
4th T20I duck for Grandhomme. 3 out of them have been golden duck and this is his first dismissal for duck with more than 1 balls faced. 2nd duck in T20Is against India for Grandhomme. 3rd consecutive innings single-digit for Grandhomme at home in T20Is. 1st dismissal for Grandhomme against a left-arm spinner since 2018.
Jadeja strikes
After the dismissal of Colin Munro, Kiwis have lost the wicket of Colin de Grandhomme, who hits a Ravindra Jadeja delivery straight into the hands of Shivam Dube in front of short fine. Kiwis have lost their third wicket as India have made a strong comeback into the match.
Munro falls
Shardul Thakur was taken for back to back sixes by Kane Williamson. The first one was towards mid wicket and the second one was behind of square. But Shardul hit back strongly by getting rid of Munro for 59. He hit the ball straight into the hands of Chahal at deep backward square leg.
Fifty for Munro
Colin Munro edges a Yuzvendra Chahal delivery and it goes for a boundary towards vacant slip region. Then, on the penultimate ball of the over, he pulls Chahal for a boundary. Munro also brought up his well deserved half-century as New Zealand have crossed the 100-run barrier.
Ten overs completed
Skipper Kane Williamson shows his class early on as he hits Shivam Dube for a flat six down the ground. The maximum ruins the over from Dube as he concedes 7 runs from it. After 10 overs, Kiwis have scored 91 runs for the loss of one wicket.
Stat attack
5th consecutive dismissal after scoring with 30 or more runs in T20Is for Gupill (All at home). Only one of them he converted into a fifty. 8th consecutive innings without a fifty for Guptill against India in T20Is.
First breakthrough for India
Shivam Dube has managed to provide India with their first breakthrough of the innings as he gets rid of Martin Guptill for 30. It would not have been possible without Rohit Sharma, who took a brilliant catch at square leg boundary. He took the catch, lobbed the ball in the air, touched the rope because of momentum and then came back in and completed the catch.
Spin introduced
Yuzvendra Chahal comes into the attack and stems the flow of runs a bit as he gives away just 5 runs and no boundaries in the over. India will have to target wicket otherwise Kiwi batsmen will have the opportunity to cut loose in the end and set a big score.
Another big over for Kiwis
Guptill started the sixth over from Shami with a boundary towards square leg and then two wides and four runs later, he hit the ball over long on for a glorious six. Shami concedes 16 runs in the over as Kiwis are primed for a huge score here.
Fifty partnership
Gultill hit a Bumrah delivery towards third man and a poor effort in the field from Thakur has resulted in a boundary for the right hander. 8 runs conceded by Bumrah in the fifth over as New Zealand have already scored 52/0. India need to break this partnership soon.
Shardul being torn apart
18 runs conceded by Shardul Thakur in his second over and alarm bells are already ringing for Virat Kohli’s troops. Munro his a boundary straight down the ground and followed it up with a huge six towards the sight screen. The last ball was a bouncer and it took an edge off Munro’s bat and went over keeper’s head for a boundary.
Munro flexes his muscles
Three overs have been bowled and three bowlers have been used by skipper Virat Kohli. Mohammed Shami this time drops the ball short and Munro pulls the ball for a boundary towards mid wicket. Seven runs come from that over from Shami as India’s wait for first wicket still continues.
Expensive over from Shardul
Martin Guptill and Colin Munro are starting to cut loose as they rake in 12 runs from the first Shardul Thakur over. Guptill flicked the ball off his pads for his second four while Munro hit a slower ball outside off for the first six of the innings over covers.
Good start for Guptill
Martin Guptill comes dancing down the track and hits Jasprit Bumrah over mid off fielder for a boundary. Bumrah then came back strongly in the match and conceded just 3 runs off the next five deliveries. Shardul Tahkur to bowl the second over.

The character to bounce back from difficult situations gives us an edge in alien conditions. We just gotta come out and play with belief in our abilities.”

Deep Dasgupta: “Irfan, KL Rahul has changed a bit. He is not just a batsman. He is a wicketkeeper now. What does that mean for Rishabh Pant?”
Irfan Pathan: “Team management is going to keep backing Rishabh Pant. The situation with him is, that they are going to find a good finisher in him. That’s why they are investing in him. He hasn’t shown that yet. But we have seen in the IPL he has finished the game and won the games for Delhi Capitals. That’s what they see him doing in the future, and hence they keep persisting with him. I would like to see that as well. If Pant is batting at no. 6 and Hardik Pandya comes at no. 7, it’s a solid lower order, which you need in T20Is, to finish off the game.”

No revenge on Kohli’s mind
New Zealand knocked India out of the ICC World Cup 2019 after beating them by 18 runs in the semifinals. Friday’s tour-opening T20I is the first clash between the two sides since then. However, Kohli said that the Kiwi cricketers are ‘so nice’ that the team is not thinking of revenge and are confident ahead of the encounter. “Even if you want to think of revenge, these guys are so nice you cannot get into that zone,” said Kohli at the pre-match press conference.

We will have the toss in 30 minutes. This will be an all-important toss. It’s a small ground, and a flat surface. Teams batting first can really hit a few bis shots to set up a mammoth total.
