Twitter seeks policy inputs to weed out fakes

BENGALURU: Twitter is seeking inputs from the public on a new policy that the social network is developing for photos and videos that have been altered or fabricated. The inputs have also been sought from Hindi speakers — apart from six other languages — as India remains one of its fastest growing markets globally.

It has also sought inputs from English, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese speakers. Twitter said any photo, audio or video that has been significantly altered or fabricated to mislead people or to change its original meaning is considered synthetic and manipulated media — sometimes referred to as deepfakes or shallowfakes. According to its draft policy, Twitter may place a notice next to Tweets that share synthetic or manipulated media if it sees that such media is deliberately trying to mislead people.
