BJP refuses to accept Governor’s offer to form government in Maharashtra

The political drama in Maharashtra seems only to intensify after state BJP chief Chandrakant patil, clearly indicating that the Bharatiya Janata party will not stake claim to form the government in the state.

Accompanied by a host of BJP leaders met the media after the press conference, Chandrakant Patil said, “We had got a very good mandate (BJP-Sena and other smaller parties) which is why the Governor had invited us to form the government. However the Sena has not supported us in forming the government, since the mandate is for the alliance government is to be in power. We will not disregard it.”said Patil.

Giving an loaded statement Patil said, “ If the Shiv Sena wants to Insult the mandate given by the people and form a government with the Congress and NCP then our best wishes to them.”

The development comes a day after Maharashtra Governor, Bhagat Singh Koshyari, asked Devendra Fadnavis, as leader of the single largest party, to indicate the “willingness and ability of his party to form the government”. Fadnavis had time till 8 pm on Monday to prove a majority in the 288-member house.

In the just concluded Maharashtra assembly polls, The BJP and the Shiv Sena contested as an alliance and were given a clear majority 161 seats in the 288-member house. The other alliance, of the NCP-Congress, got 98 seats.

The term of the 13th state Assembly ended on Saturday. On Friday, after Fadnavis resigned as chief minister and was asked by the governor to continue as caretaker CM, the two allies had a bitter showdown over what was decided mutually about the top post during their negotiations before the Lok Sabha polls held earlier this year.

The political turmoil between the two members of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA- BJP, Shiv Sena) came out in the open after both parties accused each other of failing to honour the terms of a bargain.

Shiv Sena has been adamant for past two weeks that there would be no compromise on the post of chief minister and demanded a 50:50 formula of power sharing, which was supposedly decided by both the parties before the Lok Sabha elections. But the BJP is not keen to give away the post of chief minister.
