Our depression is great for the economy.
If we were happy with what we have, would we be spending our hard-earned money buying stuff we don’t really need?
Of course not. But that would be anathema to our consumption-based economic system.
That’s why — whether you realize it or not — the advertising industry, which is the key driver of our global economy, is day in day out trying to manipulate you into thinking that you are not enough as you are. That you are ugly. That you are insignificant. That you are a pathetic being who needs to be fixed somehow, who needs to be improved upon through some external means. Through some product or service.
You are made to feel unattractive, so they can sell you beauty products. You are made to feel unimportant, so they can sell you cars. You are made to feel left behind, so they can sell you smartphones and electronic gadgets. You are made to feel worthless, like a piece of crap, so they can sell you happiness.
The advertising industry is a multi-trillion dollar industry, and it works mostly by killing your self-esteem. That’s exactly what our economic system needs to run properly: scared, insecure, unconfident citizens who do as they are told. If they didn’t, the economy would quickly collapse. For it depends on you and me constantly buying stuff, over extracting the earth’s resources to satisfy artificial needs.
This system is a system of coerce, deceit, and psychological warfare. It’s a system of destruction, ruining our well-being and that of our planet. And as long as we accept and uphold it, its destruction is not going to end.
