Young’s Manchester United captaincy goes to Maguire after Inter move | Football

Ashley Young has completed his move from Manchester United to Internazionale, with Harry Maguire replacing the 34-year-old as club captain at Old Trafford. Young’s €1.5m (£1.3m) deal with the Serie A club commits him to the club until June, with the option of a further season.

“Ashley Young is officially an Inter player,” Inter confirmed on their official website. “The 34-year-old English defender arrives from Manchester United and has signed a contract lasting until June 30 2020 with an option to extend for a further season.”

Young becomes the third English player to join Inter following Gerry Hitchens, who moved to the club from Aston Villa in 1961, and former United midfielder Paul Ince, who spent two seasons in Italy after signing in 1995. Inter signed Romelu Lukaku from United last summer, while former Old Trafford teammate Alexis Sanchez is currently on loan there.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær confirmed Maguire as full-time captain, six months after his £80m move from Leicester.

“Harry has come in and been wearing the captain’s armband and he will keep wearing it,” Solskjær said. “He has been a leader in the group and I have been not surprised but impressed with his leadership skills.”

On Young, Solskjær told United’s official site: “Ashley’s mindset was that he wanted to try a new adventure and he’s approaching 35 now. He’s done a fantastic job and served this club fantastically. I think it was an opportunity for him that we had to say yes to. We got a transfer fee for someone who’s been so loyal to the club.

“Good luck. That’s what Manchester United do, you have players for a long time and then they move on and someone else steps in.”

Solskjær had earlier cast doubt on Marcus Rashford’s hopes of shaking off a back injury for Sunday’s Premier League game with Liverpool. Rashford made a brief appearance in the midweek FA Cup win over Wolves which may have cost him his chances of figuring at Anfield.

“We’re going to give him the absolute amount of time but I am not going to hold my breath,” he said.
