“Covid has forced a lot of businesses to go digital, while some have to go digital in order to rebound,” he said, describing the pay cuts and layoffs in the tech sector as short-term. “While it might take you a little bit longer to find the right job for yourself, you will eventually find one,” he said.
For those not impacted by the downturn, he said this is the ideal time to learn new skills, and be able to do more. “When the seas are rough, fishermen make their nets,” he said.
Top tech jobs
Citing Career Karma and Indeed numbers, Gupta showed that AI/ML engineer remained the fastest growing job role – 344% growth in jobs over the last three years. It was followed by roles of data scientist, information security analyst (cybersecurity), traditional software engineer, fullstack developer, devops/cloud engineer, frontend developer and mobile app developer. Gupta contrasted the job growth data with a recent HackerEarth survey that showed an overwhelming 61% saying that data science is the skill they want to learn next.
Startups or enterprise?
Would working for startups be risky in this environment? Gupta said it’s always good to spend some time in startups, since they give a lot of exposure. “But pick wisely where to join, ensure the role adds a lot to your career. But if you are looking for stability and are not aggressive about your careergraph, then go for a larger organisation,” he said.
QA is here to stay
Quality assurance (QA), Gupta said, will continue to be a big profession in India. “Automation is not going to replace manual testing entirely; that is a long road. In the meantime, QA engineers today are not just testing systems. They are also writing scripts, building models, and even using data science to create these systems that will help them to test not only their application at that point of time, but to create a continuous testing infrastructure. Understanding scripting languages and knowledge of various testing tools are key here,” he said.
