Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Keshav Prasad Maurya, defended a police officer of the state over the latter’s comments made during a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. Akhilesh Singh, Superintendent of Police, Meerut, had been captured on camera telling a few protestors to ‘go to Pakistan’. Maurya said that the comments had been directed at a few individuals who were rioting, pelting stones and raising slogans in support of Pakistan. The deputy Chief Minister further clarified that the comments were not aimed at the Muslim community at large.
