The Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi government comfortably won a floor test to prove its majority in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly on Saturday even as the opposition BJP walked out of the House alleging that norms were being flouted.

The coalition of the Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress which has 154 members got 169 votes. The majority mark in the assembly is 145.

“This session is unconstitutional and illegal. Appointment of Pro-tem Speaker was also unconstitutional,” former chief minister and the BJP’s legislature party leader Devendra Fadnavis told reporters after walking out of the assembly.

Congress’s Ashok Chavan proposed the trust vote while Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) Nawab Malik and Shiv Sena’s Sunil Prabhu second the proposal even as the Opposition continued to raise slogans.

The BJP MLAs started walking out of Assembly in protest even as Protem Speaker Dilip Patil requested all MLAs to remain seated for a head count ahead of the floor test.

The session began with Fadnavis raising objections that the session was not being held according to rules. Fadnavis also said replacing the pro-tem speaker was illegal and has never happened earlier. The former chief minister also claimed that the swearing-in of Maharashtra ministers was not as per Constitutional norms.

Patil rejected Fadnavis’s claims saying that the governor had given the permission for this session and that it was as per rules. He also said State cabinet has “complete authority” to name pro tem speaker

Earlier in the day, NCP leaders claimed that the coalition was likely to get 165 to 170 votes in the floor test.
