A search-and-rescue effort is underway to locate three people who failed to return from a Northern Territory fishing trip on Friday afternoon.

It was reported to police that the trio, including two men, had travelled to Leaders Creek with plans to fish at the Vernon Islands and were due to return home that evening.

Police were actively searching the area via helicopter and boat, but were yet to locate the party.

The trio were travelling in a Stacer Nomad with a grey coloured canopy and Yamaha motor, the officers said.

Police encouraged anyone out on the water in the area of Melville Island, Vernon Islands or Cape Hotham who may have seen the boat or have any information about its whereabouts to contact police on 131 444.

No further information was available at the time of publication.
