It’s been a long old while since we’ve seen a high-end Samsung NVMe SSD and it has certainly been worth the wait as the SSD980 PRO has put the company firmly back in the spotlight in the high performance consumer market space.

The Samsung 980 Pro is the NVMe SSD you want–if you’re rocking PCIe 4 (Ryzen-exclusive as of this writing). For more common PCIe 3-equipped systems, it’s still a great drive, but not significantly better than the lower-priced competition.

This is an impressive entry into the PCI-E 4.0 realm for Samsung, with the move to 3-bit NAND, however logical, a little disappointing for a product with the PRO name. We’re living in a TLC/QLC world now, and Samsung’s adoption of 3-bit NAND for their flagship likely signals the end of 2-bit MLC in consumer drives.

If you want a drive which is the fastest consumer drive on the planet, and comes with the reassurance that you get from a Samsung product, then the 980 Pro is unquestionably the drive for you. Indeed the only question is whether you have a PCI Express 4.0 motherboard capable of making the most of it. If you haven’t, and won’t for a while, then stick with the 970 Pro.

Are you looking for the best? Look no further. With the fastest performance we have seen from a NAND SSD yet, Samsung’s 980 Pro makes other NVMe SSDs look slow.

Those headline grabbing sequential figures are impressive, but the day-to-day performance isn’t quite the leap that many were hoping for. It’s also a bit too pricey.

Although it wasn’t a clean sweep across the board, Samsung’s new SSD 980 Pro series of drives are arguably the fastest consumer SSDs currently available, for now. The 250GB and 1TB drives we tested offered the best overall read performance we have seen from a consumer SSD to date, especially at lower queue depths, which is key for traditional desktop / mobile use cases.

Samsung’s 980 Pro isn’t the absolute fastest PCIe 4.0 drive you can buy, but it continues the company’s tradition of blistering performance, quality, and a fair price.

Samsung’s PCI Express 4.0-based SSD 980 Pro will delight upgraders and PC builders who have deep pockets (and a compatible AMD desktop platform). It delivers the fastest theoretical performance from a mainstream SSD we’ve seen to date.

The Samsung SSD 980 PRO series is here and delivers outstanding performance that makes it the fastest drive on the market in many of our tests!

The Samsung 980 Pro was the most impressive PCIe Gen4 SSD to hit the market and it now comes in capacities of 2TB. The drive leverages the company’s sixth-generation of VNAND and its latest Elpis controller to bring quoted speeds as high as 7GB/s read and over 1 million IOPS. The 2TB version brings all the benefits of the earlier version with twice the maximum capacity while still all fitting on a single side.

The Samsung SSD 980 Pro is the best-performing consumer drive we’ve tested to date, it more than doubled the numbers of its competitors in some areas. The largest gain over the competition we’ve tested so far in the Gen4 category is the Pro’s write performance, in both 64K sequential and 4K random. It will be interesting to see how the upcoming PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X/S will handle non-propriety PCIe 4.0 drives as well, as gamers are going to want to squash game loads with a drive like this.

The sprint performance of the 980 Pro is fantastic, but current NAND technology has its limits for extended operations. With the need for specific PC hardware and the high cost per GB, this solution is only for those who aren’t budget constrained.
