Parliament Receives Another ‘Suspicious Package’ Just Days After Asian MPs Targeted

Police and ambulances have been called to the Houses of Parliament to respond to a suspicious package, just days after police announced they were investigating four other packages sent to Asian MPs.

Police said on Thursday one woman is being “assessed as a precaution”, while officers investigate.

The Metropolitan Police were called at 10.14am on Thursday. They are at the scene with the London Ambulance Service.

A spokesperson for the parliamentary authorities said: “The Met Police are currently investigating a suspicious item of mail in the Palace of Westminster.

“We cannot provide any more details at this stage.”

Earlier this week four packages were sent to Muslim Labour MPs within 48 hours, reportedly including copies of a “Punish a Muslim” letter that advocates violent acts against Muslims.

All four letters arrived in the Norman Shaw north building in Westminster, which houses MPs’ offices.

One of these was sent to Labour MP Mohammad Yasin.  Police said the package contained an unknown liquid, which was later deemed non-hazardous. It was sent to the office of the Bedford MP, but he did not personally open it.

No one was injured in the incident, but staff were evacuated from the Norman Shaw North, a parliamentary building, and two people were taken to hospital as a precaution.

A spokesperson from Yasin’s office told HuffPost UK: “Everyone is fine, but it was clearly a worrying incident.”

The other MPs targeted were Rupa Huq (Ealing Central and Acton), Rushanara Ali (Bethnal Green and Bow) and Afzal Khan (Manchester Gorton).

According to reports, police are concerned the incident may be linked to a number of letters sent to households across the country urging them to get involved in “Punish A Muslim Day”.

Counter-terror police announced they were investigating the A4 letters, which encouraged the public to carry out “horrific” acts of violence against Muslims on April 3.
