Newspaper headlines: Royal couple ‘separate’ and £5bn for local buses
Reports that the Queen’s eldest grandson, Peter Phillips, and his wife, Autumn, are to separate after 12 years of marriage feature in several papers, but make the splash for the Sun. Mr Phillips – son of Princess Anne and cousin of Prince William and Prince Harry – is “devastated”, a source told the paper. The report by the paper’s executive editor Dan Wootton also claims that the Queen “is believed to be upset” – but there is no official confirmation at this stage from the royal family of the split.
Several of Tuesday’s papers focus on transport – both local and national. The i leads on Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s plans to invest £5bn in local bus services and cycle routes over the next five years, while also giving the go-ahead for HS2 – with a sub-headline saying the intention is to “level up infrastructure and help commuters in [the] North and Midlands”.
“4,000 new buses to get Britain moving” is the approving headline in the Daily Express, which calls it a “massive expansion in Britain’s bus network”, with more routes, services and cheaper fares across the UK. The plans will include 4,000 “zero emission” buses and more than 1,000 miles of new cycle routes, says the paper.
The Guardian suggests the bid to “improve transport outside London” will help the PM “fend off” criticism over his expected approval for HS2. Meanwhile, the paper is one of several to feature glitzy pictures from Sunday’s Oscars, where South Korean dark comedy Parasite won Best Picture.
The Daily Telegraph’s lead focuses on the reaction to the coronavirus outbreak. Under new police powers “any person deemed at risk of spreading the virus could be held against their will, forcibly assessed, and detained” for up to 14 days, the paper reports. The “unprecedented” regulations come in immediately, the paper says, after one Briton quarantined in the Wirral “threatened to abscond”.
“How many more are infected?” asks the Daily Mail’s headline, as it reports on fears of a “major coronavirus outbreak” hitting the UK. The paper says a British businessman, who contracted the disease in Singapore before returning to England, may have come into contact with “hundreds of people” near his home in Brighton.
Among those infected by the Briton are two GPs, says the Times – sparking a hunt to trace patients they may have treated. The paper understands the doctors treated 13 patients between them, before being quarantined. The coverage of the Oscars is headed up by a large front-page picture of Brad Pitt casually leaning and clutching a can of drink, with the caption explaining that he is waiting for his newly-won Oscar to be engraved.
Fears over the coronavirus will also see handshakes banned at the world’s largest smartphone trade fair later this month, reports the FT. Major tech firms have already pulled out of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, says the paper. The FT’s lead focuses on post-Brexit trade negotiations – with Chancellor Sajid Javid set to demand a “decades-long deal” to give the City access to the EU market.
The Daily Mirror reports on the fallout from Storm Ciara, which left hundreds of homes flooded over the last 48 hours. The paper says that those affected are “fuming at the Tories’ failure to stop traumatic floods for the third time since 2012”. A large picture of semi-submerged homes in West Yorkshire accompanies the headline “Sold down the river”.
The Daily Star’s front page features a picture of a cloud in the “shape of a dragon”, which the paper says was caused by the stormy weather. Meanwhile, the Star’s lead story reports that Crufts bosses have blamed Brexit for a fall in the number of “foreign mutts” taking part in the dog annual show. A doggy Brexit story prompts the Star’s sub-editors to come up with the one-word headline “Rexit”
