Newspaper headlines: Papers focus on PM’s rethink of Brexit deal timings
The Daily Telegraph says the vote on Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s “radically altered” Brexit deal will “prove to voters that [he] has no intention of using his new power to pursue a softer Brexit”. It also reports that he wants to “shake up” the House of Lords by appointing “Brexit-supporting peers”.
But the Financial Times says the legislation would create “a new cliff-edge at the end of next year if no trade deal is in place”. The paper reports that Mr Johnson “is determined to quash suggestions” that he will “tack to a softer Brexit” – speculation that, it says, has fuelled a rise in British stocks.

The Times makes the same point about a softer Brexit, and argues that the bill will put Mr Johnson in “direct conflict with Brussels”. The paper reports that some senior figures in his cabinet fear that a “bare bones” trade deal could damage the economy.
The Daily Express reports that Mr Johnson plans to “defy” Brussels by outlawing an extension to the UK’s transition period.
Labour Mayor of London Sadiq Khan writes in Tuesday’s i newspaper. The front page highlights his criticism of a “ludicrous” party leadership and runs a quote: “Labour simply did not put forward a credible candidate for prime minister or a believable set of policies.”
Shadow education secretary Angela Rayner is expected to run for deputy Labour leader, the Guardian reports – and in doing so has “cleared the way” for shadow business secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey to run for the leadership.
The fallout from the Duke of York’s Newsnight interview returns to the Daily Mail’s front page, which quotes the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, as saying that “everybody is human”. The paper calls it an “extraordinary intervention”.
The Daily Mirror reports that a private jet used by royals and celebrities “came within 10ft of smashing into an illegal drone”. It claims the “near-miss” is believed to be “the joint closest ever recorded in UK airspace”.
The Metro splashes on the reported theft of £50m worth of jewellery from the Kensington home of Tamara Ecclestone. The paper reports that her father, ex-Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, says it was probably an “inside job”.
The Daily Star reports that Sports Personality of the Year presenter Gary Lineker has apologised after what it calls a “blunder” in his introduction of cricketer Ben Stokes.
Steve Thomson, a builder who won a £105m EuroMillions jackpot last month, is doing customers’ jobs for free over Christmas, according to the Sun. “He’s a top bloke,” it quotes one customer as saying.
