On paper, the Motorola Edge Plus has everything it needs to compete with the best phones out there right now. The reality, however, is it a little different. Motorola’s first flagship in years offers first-rate performance, clean software and some truly excellent battery life. Unfortunately, the phone’s marquee feature — its spacious Endless Edge display — feels like an example of style over substance, and could make the phone difficult for some to use. All told, the Edge Plus gets enough right to make it a competent flagship, but one that can’t might not beat out its competition.

That leaves the Edge Plus in an awkward place: not as polished as the S20 lineup, not as flashy as the V60 and its second screen, not as cheap as the OnePlus 8 Pro, and not as revolutionary as the Pixel’s camera. It also certainly doesn’t help that it’s only available from one carrier. Make no mistake, Motorola has built a great phone in the Edge Plus. But the issue is that in today’s super-saturated phone market, great isn’t quite good enough.

The Motorola Edge Plus has pretty much everything you’d hope for in a premium 5G phone: It’s got a Snapdragon 865 chipset, a giant battery, an OLED screen with a high refresh rate and multiple rear cameras with heavy-duty specs. Motorola took features found on other top-of-the-line Android phones, put its own Moto spin on them and housed them all into one of the most wonderful Android phones I’ve tried in a long time.
