Kicker update on Arsenal target Bernd Leno’s summer dilemma

Where next for Bernd Leno?

In recent months, Bernd Leno has become the most likely goalkeeper option to join Arsenal.

Petr Cech is now 36 and failed to impress hugely last season. Similarly, David Ospina is a goalkeeper that provides little faith for Arsenal supporters.

With Sven Mislintat as Head of Recruitment at Arsenal, formerly of Borussia Dortmund, it is not hard to see why Leno has been linked to Arsenal.

In truth also, Leno – a 26-year-old goalkeeper who has excelled in the Bundesliga – looks like a great option for the Gunners.

Whilst not an elite goalkeeper, Leno has room to improve and Arsenal’s budget and place in the Europa League means they are unlikely to be able to sign a custodian like Jan Oblak (Atletico Madrid) or Alisson (Roma).

Kicker on Bernd Leno’s future

German magazine Kicker – usually a reliable source for transfer news – have a detailed article on Bernd Leno on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Bayer Leverkusen confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky from Eintracht Frankfurt.

It is very unlikely that Lukas Hradecky joined Leverkusen without receiving assurances that he would be first choice goalkeeper.

Bernd Leno has rejected Napoli

Kicker claim that Leno now has two main options having rejected the advances of Napoli: Arsenal and Atletico Madrid.

They add that Leno would not have said “no” to Napoli if he did not have a plan to sign for either Arsenal, Atletico Madrid or another major club.

Giving Arsenal a major advantage here is that Leno could come in as first choice at The Emirates. Which would not be the case at Atletico Madrid where Jan Oblak is expected to sign a new deal.

Uli Ferber, Leno’s agent is quoted by Kicker saying: “Bernd is concentrating entirely on the national team, nothing else matters, there are several options for his future, which are tested without any hassle, this has not changed today.”

Ferber adds: “At the moment, Bernd is a player from Bayer Leverkusen, and this has been constant for more than seven years. As soon as there is something else to announce, we will do that.”
