Following violent clashes between students and cops on Friday which left over 50 injured, Jamia Millia Islamia on Saturday postponed its ongoing semester examinations indefinitely. University officials said the new dates would be announced “in due course of time.”
In addition to this, the varsity also rescheduled its winter vacation to begin nearly 10 days before. “Winter vacation declared from December 16 to January 5. University to open on January 6, 2020,” university’s media coordinator Ahmad Azeem said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, students of several faculties and departments said they boycotted their semester examinations in order to show solidarity with the injured students and against the “unconstitutional” Citizenship Amendment Act and pan-India National Register of Citizens exercise.
On Friday, after the students protesting against CAA-NRC were stopped from marching to Parliament, the protests took a violent turn with police resorting to lathicharge and students retaliating back with stones.
Tear gas shells were thrown inside the university campus and the violence continued for about two hours causing serious injuries to at least 12-13 students. Police said a dozen personnel were also injured in the incident. At least 42 students were detained during the protests and were taken to Badarpur police station before being released in the evening. The protests had disrupted vehicular movement near the vicinity and in adjoining areas for over five hours.
