At $179, the Pixel Buds are priced the same as Jabra’s Elite 75t earbuds, which I’d still personally pick over these for their more dynamic sound and because you don’t miss out on features depending on what phone you have. But if Google Assistant has a decent-sized presence in your life, you might be willing to make do with the downsides of Google’s new earbuds — lacking bass and the occasional swell in outside noise — for the convenience of being able to call upon it anytime, anywhere.

Google finally has a set of wireless earbuds that are worthy contenders. They’re a little more expensive than the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus, which are probably the better value — they get discounted $10 or $20 on occasion — but the Pixel Buds 2 are a solid all-around package with some distinguishing features and excellent call quality.

Google’s new Pixel Buds are a hit. The case is exceptional, from its size and feel to its functionality with a big battery and wireless charging. The earbuds themselves are small and comfortable, with good sound and high-quality microphones for calls. Their 4-5 hour battery life isn’t industry-leading, but is plenty for most people. The complete package is well worth the money, and an excellent pair of true wireless earbuds.

But the Samsung Galaxy Buds+ offer more than double the battery life between charges in a package nearly as compact for $150. We’ve also seen the Sony WF-1000XM3 drop as low as $189 on sale, and they outlast the Pixel Buds with noise cancelation. If they cost $30 less and lasted an additional hour on a charge, the Pixel Buds would be a very compelling option for a lot of people. But as it stands, for most, $179 is too much to pay for these.

Google has made an enjoyable pair of true wireless earbuds. The $179 Pixel Buds don’t stand out as the best true wireless earbuds for any and all devices, but they clearly work best with Android devices, Google’s own Pixel family included. We think it’s a better experience on a wider range of Android devices than what the Galaxy Buds+ give you. But you’re trading off battery life here — five hours versus 11 hours of playback.

They’re comfortable, sound great and have a solid case that uses modern USB-C charging and wireless charging. They also pair super easily with Android phones and give you the Google Assistant wherever you are. For $179, they’re priced right.

Google’s updated Pixel Buds are a revelation compared to the previous model. Not only are they true wireless now, but the smart features are reliable, the touch controls are easy to master and comfort is top-notch. Battery life is on par with Apple’s AirPods, but it’s well below average in 2020. Still, at $179, Google has a powerful set of earbuds for the Android faithful that really shine when paired with a Pixel phone.
