Gears of War: Reloaded remaster lands August 26 with 4K, 120 fps, and cross-play

Something to look forward to: Anyone who thinks of Gears of War whenever they hear Gary Jules’ cover of Mad World will be rejoicing at news that a remaster of the original 2006 game will land on August 26. Not only will it offer modern perks such as 4K resolution and up to 120 fps, but it also supports cross-play and cross-progression on all platforms, including the PlayStation 5 (first time the game is released on Sony’s platform).

Mike Crump, studio head at Gears of War developer The Coalition, wrote that Gears of War: Reloaded will be a celebration of one of gaming’s greatest franchises.

“As we approach the 20th anniversary of Gears of War in 2026, we’re reflecting on what this franchise means. It’s about the stories we’ve told, the friendships we’ve built, and the unforgettable moments we’ve shared together. With Gears of War: Reloaded, we’re opening that door to more players than ever,” Crump wrote.

Gears of War: Reloaded includes all the content from Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. That means you get all the post-launch DLC, including the bonus campaign act, all multiplayer maps and modes, and a full roster of characters and cosmetics unlockable through progression.

The remaster also promises 4K resolutions, 60 fps (campaign) and 120 fps (multiplayer) support, HDR, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, VRR, improved graphics such as better anti-aliasing, and no loading screens during the campaign.

The Campaign supports two-player co-op, and Versus Multiplayer allows up to 8 players, with cross-play across all platforms. That brings us to the biggest part of the announcement: Gears of War, one of the most iconic Xbox games ever, is coming to the PlayStation for the first time.

At the start of 2024, following the completion of the Activision Blizzard deal, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella reiterated a previous statement about the company aiming to deliver great titles across all platforms.

Since then, Microsoft-owned games Pentiment, Sea of Thieves, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle have made their way to the PlayStation. And last week saw one of the platform’s tentpoles, Forza Horizon 5, release on the PS5. With Gears of War now coming to Sony’s platform, the next big game to make the jump could be Halo.

Gears of War: Reloaded launches August 26, 2025, for $39.99 on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation 5 and Steam. It will also be available on day one with Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass. Anyone who owns the digital version of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition will receive a free upgrade to Gears of War: Reloaded.
