Football League: Burnley concede at last but win anyway; Birmingham lose | Championship

Burnley’s run of Championship clean sheets finally came to an end on Tuesday night, but they kept the heat on in the promotion race with a 2-1 win at Cardiff.

Yousef Salech’s firm header in the 42nd minute was the first goal the Clarets had conceded in 1,132 minutes of league action, a run of 12 consecutive clean sheets broken. But by the time Salech scored it, early goals from Josh Brownhill and Maxime Estève had already put Scott Parker’s side in charge, and the win puts them two points behind second-placed Sheffield United.

Second-half goals from Joe Gelhardt and Abu Kamara gave Hull a 2-0 victory against fellow strugglers Plymouth for their first home win of the year.

Leeds loanee Gelhardt turned in on the rebound to break the deadlock before Kamara sealed the best move of the game as the Tigers ended a run of five home games without a win, moving up to 19th place, while Plymouth’s winless away run in the league now stands at 18 games.

Goals from Zak Vyner and Harry Cornick ended Bristol City’s winless run on the road as they won 2-0 at Millwall, where home fans showed support for goalkeeper Liam Roberts after his red card against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup.

It was City’s first away win in 10 attempts to put them level on points with sixth-placed West Brom. Millwall were playing for the first time since Roberts was sent off for a horror challenge on Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and home fans sang “There’s only one Liam Roberts” during Tuesday’s match.

Swansea took a fourth point from two games under caretaker boss Alan Sheehan as they held Preston to a goalless draw at Deepdale.

Milutin Osmajic, who had revelled in helping Preston into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with a 3-0 win over Burnley on Saturday, spurned several good opportunities for the hosts as Swansea moved 10 points clear of the relegation zone.

Birmingham’s lead at the top of League One was cut to nine points as they suffered a surprise 3-1 defeat at Bolton.

Emil Hansson gave Blues the lead midway through the first half but the Trotters hit back through John McAtee, George Thomason and Aaron Collins.

Second-placed Wycombe kept up their pursuit as they beat Burton 2-0 at Adams Park after an early effort from Daniel Udoh and comical own goal by Jack Armer.

Wrexham stayed within two points of the Chairboys as they snatched a 1-0 victory at playoff rivals Huddersfield courtesy of a 73rd-minute tap-in from substitute Steven Fletcher within moments of coming off the bench.

Stockport remain fourth after a 79th-minute Benony Andresson equaliser rescued a 1-1 draw at Northampton, who took the lead through Terry Taylor.

The other side in the playoff positions, Charlton, beat Barnsley 1-0 with an early Macaulay Gillesphey goal.

At the opposite end of the table, bottom side Shrewsbury claimed a 0-0 draw at home to fellow strugglers Bristol Rovers. The Shrews remain eight points from safety with Rovers, in 20th, three points above the relegation zone.

Wigan are seven points above the bottom four after a goalless draw at Mansfield in their first match since the departure of manager Shaun Maloney.

In League Two, leaders Walsall were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at bottom side Carlisle, allowing Bradford to move within two points of the summit.

The Saddlers looked set for a comfortable night after taking a seventh-minute lead through Taylor Allen but Aaron Hayden replied as Mark Hughes’ positive start as Carlisle boss continued.

George Lapslie struck either side of half-time and Michael Mellon was also on target as Bradford ran out 3-0 home winners over Cheltenham.

Third-placed Doncaster slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Bromley, while playoff hopefuls Notts County and AFC Wimbledon lost 2-1 and 1-0 to Barrow and second-bottom Morecambe respectively.

Morecambe’s victory took them within a point of third-bottom Tranmere, who drew 1-1 at Grimsby.
