Barcelona were held to a 2-2 draw at Real Sociedad in an entertaining game on Saturday which could see the leaders knocked off the top of La Liga by Real Madrid by the end of the weekend before Wednesday’s clasico. Mikel Oyarzabal gave the home side the lead in the 12th minute from the penalty spot after Sergio Busquets was penalised somewhat harshly for tugging the shirt of Diego Llorente while they battled for an aerial ball.

Antoine Griezmann levelled for Barça in the 38th minute, scoring against the club where he began his career by nonchalantly scooping the ball over Álex Remiro after being played in by Luis Suárez in a sweeping counterattack. Suárez put the Catalans ahead in the 49th minute, passing a layoff from Lionel Messi into an unguarded net.

Sociedad levelled shortly after the hour mark as the Swedish youngster Alexander Isak pounced on a loose ball and smashed it home from close range. Barça still lead the standings with 35 points from 16 games but Real Madrid, on 34, can take their place at the top if they win at Valencia on Sunday. Real Sociedad are fifth on 28 after goals from Álvaro Morata and Saúl Ñíguez earned Atlético Madrid a 2-0 win over Osasuna, taking Atlético up to fourth.

“Both teams had their moments and their chances and either side could have scored a third goal,” Griezmann said after the game. “It’s a shame we could only draw. We gave everything but now we have to learn, improve and focus on the clasico.”

Goals from Álvaro Morata and Saúl Ñíguez earned Atlético Madrid a 2-0 win over Osasuna.

Bayern Munich’s Philippe Coutinho scored a hat-trick and Robert Lewandowski added two more as the Bundesliga champions demolished Werder Bremen 6-1 to bounce back impressively from successive league defeats. The Bavarians climb to fourth place on 27 points.

Bayern fell behind in the 24th minute to a Milot Rashica goal after wasting several golden chances. But their profligacy went unpunished with goals from Coutinho in the 45th minute and Lewandowski in first-half stoppage time turning the game on its head. Bayern dominated after the break with Thomas Müller getting on the scoresheet amid further goals for Coutinho and Lewandowski.

Borussia Dortmund eased past Mainz 05 4-0 to notch their third straight league win and tighten their hold on third place in the Bundesliga. Days after advancing to the Champions League knockout stage their captain, Marco Reus, put them ahead with a thundering shot in the first half and Jadon Sancho grabbed his eighth league goal in the 62nd to double their lead.

The England international also hit the post after Thorgan Hazard made it 3-0 with a fine shot in the 69th. A low drive from Nico Schulz six minutes from time capped a strong away performance. Dortmund are third on 29 points, two behind second-placed Borussia Mönchengladbach, who play Wolfsburg on Sunday. RB Leipzig, for whom Patrik Schick, Timo Werner and Nordi Mukiele scored in a commanding 3-0 win at Fortuna Düsseldorf, are top on 33 points.

Napoli’s coach, Gennaro Gattuso, suffered a disappointing debut as Gervinho’s stoppage-time goal earned Parma a 2-1 win at the Stadio San Paolo to extend the home side’s winless run in Serie A to eight games. Dejan Kulusevski’s early opener was cancelled out by an Arkadiusz Milik header midway through the second half but Gervinho finished off a clinical counterattack to earn his side a late victory.

A late winner from the former Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini was enough to give Sampdoria victory over Genoa in the Derby della Lanterna. Both sides are languishing in the lower reaches of Serie A. with Sampdoria now in 17th on 15 points and their city rivals second-bottom on 11.
