Disney+: Everything Coming to the Streaming Service

The forthcoming Disney+ service is shaping up to be a big addition to the streaming world, and the more we see about this platform, the more of a competitor it appears to be for Netflix, Hulu, and other direct-to-consumer video platforms.

Available for pre-order right now and launching on November 12, Disney+ will host over 600 TV shows and movies upon its debut, with more coming over time. First and foremost among the content will be a variety of projects tied to Disney’s Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and Disney-specific properties, with an emphasis on a family-friendly theme. The latest additions to the programming lineup include Marvel blockbuster Avengers: Endgame, a set of movie franchise revivals, a new series from Big Little Lies producer David E. Kelley, and another live-action Star Wars show.

Here’s everything we know so far about what’s coming to Disney+.

Original  shows and movies

Big Shot

In this 10-episode dramedy from David E. Kelley and Everybody Loves Raymond star Brad Garrett, Full House’s John Stamos plays a disgraced college basketball coach who takes on a new gig at a girls’ prep school.

Diary of a Female President

Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez produces and stars in a half-hour comedy about a Cuban-American teen who, much later in life, becomes President of the United States.

Noelle

Bill Hader and Anna Kendrick star in this Christmas comedy about Santa Claus’ children. As the heir to Santa’s toy-delivering empire, Nick (Hader) suffers a nervous breakdown and flees the North Pole, forcing his sister Noelle (Kendrick) to track him down in the “real” world. Noelle will be available on Disney+ at launch in November 2019, just in time for the holiday season.

Lady and the Tramp

Disney’s quest to re-make all of its classic animated features isn’t limited to theaters. Disney+’s Lady and the Tramp retells the story of an upper-class house dog who falls for a mangy stray and features a stacked voice cast including Tessa Thompson, Justin Theroux, Sam Elliot, and Janelle Monáe, as well as live-action appearances by Community stars Yvette Nicole Brown and Ken Jeong.

Stargirl

Not to be confused with the upcoming DC Universe series of the same name, Stargirl is based on the YA novel by Jerry Spinelli and stars Grace Vanderwaal as a young woman who teaches a teenager named Leo that being yourself is more important than being popular.

Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made

The latest film from Tom McCarthy, who was nominated for an Oscar for directing Spotlight (and won another for writing it), centers on a young boy’s efforts to unravel the truth behind the class hamster’s mysterious death.

Togo

Based on a true story, this Willem Defoe vehicle tells the tale of a sled dog and his owner who must race across 700 miles of Alaskan wilderness to deliver medicine to a small town besieged by a deadly disease.

The launch lineup

Disney+ arrives on November 12, 2019, with a massive collection of shows and movies both old and new. Looking for a place to find all of Disney’s animated features, ranging from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Moana? What about their direct-to-video sequels? Need a one-stop-shop for Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, and all of the other Disney Afternoon offerings? What about Marvel’s ’90s animated series? Want to relive Disney Channel classics like Hanna Montana and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, or cult favorites like So Weird? It’s all there, alongside plenty of Disney’s vintage live-action family films, its made-for-TV ’80s movies, recent Marvel blockbusters like Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, the Star Wars films, and more.

Disney+’s launch lineup is truly staggering, so take a look at the complete list. You’re bound to see something you like.

Star Wars

The Mandalorian

The live-action Star Wars series being developed by director Jon Favreau will be set seven years after the Battle of Endor in Return of the Jedi, and will follow “a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.” Game of Thrones actor Pedro Pascal will play the series’ title role. The first season’s trailer is available now, and the pilot episode (and possibly others) will be on Disney+ on launch day. You won’t have to wait too long for more, either. According to Collider, preproduction on The Mandalorian season2 has already begun.

Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries

The long-rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi feature is dead and gone, but its spirit lives on in a new Disney+ TV show. As he did in the prequel trilogy, Ewan McGregor will play the Jedi master in the series, which McGregor says will be around four hours long, and will begin filming in 2020. The show will focus on Kenobi’s time as a hermit in the Tatooine desert. According to Marvel’s Star Wars comic books, Obi-Wan spent a fair amount of his time in exile tangling with Jabba’s goons, acting as a bodyguard for Jawa traders, and fighting off bounty hunters, so the setting could be more exciting than it initially sounds. Besides, according to Star Wars News Net, the script is “great.”

Untitled Cassian Andor series

Set after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi and before Episode VII — The Force Awakens, this series will bring back Rogue One: A Star Wars Story actor Diego Luna as the rebel spy Cassian Andor. Alan Tudyk will also return to voice K-2SO, Andor’s sassy robot sidekick. The series will take place prior to the events of Rogue One.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars series

A seventh season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars is currently in production for Disney+ and will air February 2020.

Other rumored Star Wars solo series

Obi-Wan might not be traveling to Disney+ alone. We Got This Covered claims that series starring Star Wars characters like Lando Calrissian, Solo‘s femme fatale Qi’ra, reformed stormtrooper Finn, and ace Resistance pilot Poe Dameron are all in early development at Disney. The report doesn’t say whether or not Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke, Oscar Isaac, or John Boyega, all of whom are highly sought-after Hollywood stars, will reprise their respective big-screen roles, and none of these shows have been confirmed by Disney. For now, consider these shows rumors, and nothing more.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Along with many of the previously released, big-screen installments of the MCU — including the highest-grossing film of all time, Avengers: Endgame — Disney+ has announced several original shows either set in or inspired by Marvel’s live-action universe.

Hawkeye

Jeremy Renner will reprise his role as Avengers sharpshooter Hawkeye for a live-action series that will have him pass the torch — as well as his bow and arrows, most likely — to a young girl named Kate Bishop. The series is inspired by Matt Fraction and David Aja’s Hawkeye comics, which followed Clint Barton and his young protégé.

Loki

Loki in Thor Ragnorok

The Loki series will be overseen by Rick & Morty producer Michael Waldron and will follow the God of Mischief following his escape from New York with the Tesseract in Avengers: Endgame. Loki debuts spring 2021.

WandaVision

The Scarlet Witch and the Vision will co-headline a show for Disney+ that will bring back Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen as the android Vision and the energy-manipulating Scarlet Witch. Captain Marvel co-writer Jac Schaeffer will serve as head writer and showrunner on the series, which will arrive on Disney+ in spring 2021.

The series is described as a half-sitcom, half-drama, and will introduce the grown-up version of Captain Marvel‘s Monica Rambeau and a “nosy neighbor” played by Kathryn Hahn. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the show will be set in the 1950s in some way or another, and an official poster for the project created by Andy Park seems to support that rumor. MCU veterans Kat Dennings and Randall Park will also appear in WandaVision as Thor‘s Darcy Lewis and Ant-Man and the Wasp‘s Jimmy Woo, respectively. Reportedly, the series will tie directly into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, in which the Scarlet Witch plays a major role

Falcon and The Winter Soldier

MCU veterans Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie will reprise their roles as the Winter Soldier and the Falcon, respectively, in this series penned by Empire writer Malcolm Spellman and directed by Kari Skogland (The Handmaid’s Tale).

The series is expected to have its lead characters deal with their new roles and relationship with Captain America in the aftermath of Endgame. Emily VanCamp will play Sharon Carter once more in the show, while Captain America: Civil War villain Daniel Brühl’s Baron Helmut Zemo will return to fill the role of the big bad. Falcon and The Winter Soldier will also introduce rival super-soldier U.S. Agent to the MCU. He’ll be played by Rupert Wyatt.

Ms. Marvel

Superhero fangirl and teenage superheroine Kamala Kahn will officially enter the MCU by way of Ms. Marvel, opening the door to future appearances on the big screen. In the comics, Kamala uses her shape and size-changing powers to fight crime while still trying to live a regular life as a young American Muslim, and we expect the show to mine similar territory.

She-Hulk

Jennifer Walters isn’t just a talented New York attorney. She’s also Bruce Banner’s cousin, and thanks to a blood infusion, she shares some of his gamma radiation-powered abilities. She-Hulk will follow Jen’s life both in and out of the courtroom and has the potential the be the funniest MCU entry yet: In the comics, Jen sometimes practices “superhuman law,” and sometimes breaks the fourth wall for some Deadpool-style comedy.

Moon Knight

Billionaire-turned-vigilante Marc Spector looks and sounds like a cut-rate Batman, but cut him some slack. In addition to supervillains, Moon Knight must also battle his mental illness, which takes the form of multiple personalities that take over his body at a moment’s notice. Compared to the rest of the MCU, Moon Knight is a dark and gritty character, and his Disney+ series might be the perfect medicine for fans still sore over Netflix’s dearly departed Marvel spin-offs.

What If … ?

A March report indicated that an animated series based on Marvel’s alternate-universe What If … ? comics is also being developed for the streaming service. The anthology-style series will tell standalone stories that explore what might happen if certain events in Marvel’s cinematic universe unfolded differently.

For example, one episode will show what would happen if Peggy Carter received the Super Soldier serum and became “Captain Carter” instead of Steve Rogers, forcing the scrawny Brooklyn kid to suit up in a Howard Stark-created suit of armor. The live-action MCU actors are expected to voice their characters for the animated series.

Muppets Now

ABC’s Muppets revival didn’t last very long, but Disney is trying again with Muppets Now, a “short-form unscripted series” starring Jim Henson’s lovable band of misfits. Muppets Now will premiere in 2020, and Kermit the Frog will reveal more information as soon as Joe the Legal Weasel permits him to do so.

The Disney Channel

Lizzie McGuire

Hilary Duff returns to the role that made her famous for a new series from creator Terri Minsky. In the new series, which is a sequel to the Disney Channel original, Lizzie must navigate life as a 30-year-old in New York City, where she works as a decorator’s assistant. Also returning? Lizzie’s animated alter-ego, who is “just as zany and anxious” as ever.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series isn’t a sequel. It’s actually a show about a group of students in the “real world” trying to put on a high school production of High School Musical, although it’s also a musical itself. Confused yet? If you’ve heard High School Musical‘s soundtrack so many times that “Breaking Free” makes your ears bleed, don’t worry: High School Musical: The Musical: The Series will feature a soundtrack full of brand new tunes, as well as a few remixes of old favorites.

Phineas and Ferb: Candace Against the Universe

This Phineas and Ferb spin-off stars Candace, the titular brothers’ older sister, in a feature-length Disney+ film that somehow involves alien abduction and Phineas and Ferb’s attempts to bring Candace back to Earth. Yup, sounds like Phineas and Ferb all right.

Nat Geo content

Disney+ will also feature some non-Disney owned content, including material from National Geographic, acquired through its purchase of Fox’s magazine and affiliate TV businesses. Currently, the slate will encompass previously aired National Geographic content as well as two original series made for Disney+. In The World According to Jeff Goldblum, the eccentric actor roams the world and does… stuff, while Magic of the Animal Kingdom is a behind-the-scenes look at Disney’s animals and animal care experts at its Animal Kingdom park and Epcot Sea Base aquarium.

Unscripted series

In April, a report indicated that Disney+ is developing 10 unscripted series for its streaming platform. They include the following projects.

Encore!

The Good Place and Veronica Mars actress Kristen Bell serves as a producer on this series, which brings together former castmates of a high school musical as adults and tasks them with re-creating their original performances.

Marvel’s 616

An anthological documentary series will explore Marvel’s legacy of stories, characters, and creators and the “historical, cultural, and societal context that has become inseparable from stories of the Marvel Universe.”

Earthkeepers

The creators of Chef’s Table helm a cinematic documentary series following the people changing the way we see the animal kingdom, including conservationists and the animals they’ve devoted their career to studying.

Be Our Chef

Angela Kinsey of The Office hosts a Disney-inspired cooking competition that will ask contestants to create a dish that “represents their family through a Disney lens.”

Cinema Relics: Iconic Art of the Movies

An anthology series that explores the props and costumes that made films unique.

Marvel’s Hero Project

This series puts the spotlight on inspiring kids who have dedicated their lives to selfless acts of bravery and kindness.

(Re)Connect

A family that has reached their breaking point gets the help they need in this series that explores the issues driving families apart and the ways they can resolve those issues.

Classic revivals

Hocus Pocus, the 1993 family comedy about a trio of witches who wreak havoc on a suburban community, didn’t fare particularly well on release, but over time the film has gone on to become a cult classic and Halloween favorite. Now, 26 years after Hocus Pocus‘ debut, Disney is developing a sequel for Disney+. Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker have yet to sign on for the project, although Disney still hopes they’ll reprise their roles as Winifred, Mary, and Sarah Sanderson, respectively

Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox movie properties has the studio planning revivals of some family-friendly film franchises that previously fell under the Fox banner.

Reboots of the Home Alone (pictured), Night At the Museum, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Cheaper By the Dozen franchises are currently in development for Disney+, according to Disney CEO Bob Iger (via Deadline). It’s unknown at this point what form the rebooted franchises will take — whether as big-screen features or TV shows — but Iger indicated that they will be “reimagined” for “a new generation.”

Pixar

A new series set in the world of Disney and Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. is also in the works. The new show will be called Monsters at Work and will take place six months after Monsters, Inc. Series stars Billy Crystal and John Goodman will be back to voice Monsters, Inc.‘s charmingly gruesome heroes, Mike and Sully, respectively. They’ll be joined by fellow Monsters John Ratzenberger, Bob Peterson, and Jennifer Tilly, as well as franchise newcomers Ben Feldman (Superstore), Kelly Marie Tran (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), and comedy legend Henry Winkler. The show’s official logo was revealed in June.

Disney+ is also getting two Toy Story spinoffs, both of which tie into this summer’s Toy Story 4. Forky Asks a Question follows Forky, Toy Story 4‘s breakout star, as he tackles thought-provoking questions like “What is love?”, “What is time?”, and “What is cheese?”

Meanwhile, Lamp Life will explain what happened to Woody’s one-time love interest, Bo Peep, between Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 4. The porcelain lamp voiced by Annie Potts was conspicuously missing from Toy Story 3 and returns in this summer’s sequel with a very different vibe.

The Disney Catalog

The old stuff …

During an investors’ meeting, Disney CEO Bob Iger claimed that every single movie in the Disney catalog will arrive on Disney+ “at some point fairly soon after launch.” Previously, Disney only released its most popular animated films on home video on a limited-time basis to make them feel more special. However, the so-called Disney “vault” is going to vanish when Disney+ arrives.

With Disney+, you’ll be able to watch favorites like Aladdin, The Lion King, Fantasia, and scores of others whenever you want. For families, Disney nerds, and animation buffs, that’s a big, big deal.

… and the new stuff

Initial reports also suggest that the studio’s upcoming movie slate — which includes Frozen 2, Toy Story 4, Star Wars: Episode IX, and Jon Favreau’s live-action remake of The Lion King — will probably have exclusive streaming availability on the service. Captain Marvel will be the first Disney movie that the company will maintain exclusivity after its theatrical release, which also makes it the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie that will not be available on Netflix.

Disney also announced plans for a new Chip ‘n’ Dale animated series (see image above) featuring the chipmunk duo. The series will encompass 39 episodes, each with seven-minute running time, and follow “the ups and downs of two little creatures living life in the big city.”

The Simpsons

All 30 seasons of The Simpsons will be available on the service, thanks to Disney’s acquisition of Fox properties.
