Citizenship Act Protest Updates: Student staged violent protests in Delhi and Aligarh.

New Delhi:

Student staged strong protests in Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh against the amended Citizenship Act approved by the Parliament on Sunday. Several students were detained and later released in Delhi. In Aligarh and Meerut, internet services were cut to avoid spreading of rumours.

While an uneasy calm prevailed in Assam, West Bengal plunged deeper into chaos with incidents of arson and loot was reported from the state. 

Amid all the chaos, Prime Minister Narendra Modi the incident in the north-east were being instigated by the “Congress and its friends”.

Schools closed in southeast Delhi
All schools in southeast Delhi area are closed today in view of the situation that emerged after violence near the Jamia university, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia announced on Sunday.

“In Delhi’s south east district areas including Jamia, Okhla, New Friends Colony and Madanpur Khadar, all government and private schools will remain closed tomorrow. Delhi government has taken the decision in view of the current situation,” Mr Sisodia tweeted in Hindi.

A Jamia student has alleged that police entered the girls hostel and library. In an emotional message, she asked if the education giver to students is only for running machines.

WB Governor summons Chief Secretary, Police chief
Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Sunday summoned the West Bengal chief secretary and the director general of police to brief him on the situation following violent protests in the state against the amended citizenship law.
The two senior officials have been called to Raj Bhawan Monday morning, Mr Dhankhar wrote on his Twitter handle.

He said the situation in Bengal was “seriously compromising” the values of the Constitution.

“Taking note of highly disturbing developments in the State that seriously compromise our constitution values and rule of law, both the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police have been called upon to seen me tomorrow at Raj Bhawan at 10 am and brief me on the situation,” Mr Dhankhar tweeted.

Hurt By The Way Students Were Treated, I’m With Them: Jamia Vice- Chancellor

The students of Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University, who were detained by the Delhi Police after a protest march against the citizenship law, have received a strong backing from the university’s Vice- Chancellor.

“I am hurt by the way my students were treated. I want to let my students know that they are not alone in this fight. I am with them. I will take this matter forward as long its possible,” Jamia university Vice-Chancellor Najma Akhtar said in a video message.

TISS students call for a boycott

The students of TISS have decided to call a boycott of today’s classes and field work in solidarity with Jamia Milia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University students.

Delhi Metro: Services Resumed At All Stations

Latest Update, Delhi: All detained students have been released, say police

All detained students have been released from Kalkaji and New Friends Colony, MS Randhawa, PRO Delhi Police, told news agency ANI.

As many as 50 students were detained during protests at the Jamia Millia Islamia University, news agency PTI has reported.

Earlier on Sunday night, the Delhi Minority Commission (DMC) issued a direction to the SHO of Kalkaji Police Station to release the “injured” Jamia students held there or take them for treatment at a reputed hospital without any delay.

The commission also directed the officer to file a compliance report by 3 pm on Monday.
