The number of the confirmed novel coronavirus cases in India touched 18,601 as of the morning hours on April 21, the latest update by the Union Health ministry showed.

The number of the dead so far is 590. The states with the highest fatalities included Maharashtra (232), Madhya Pradesh (74), Gujarat (71), Delhi (47) and Telengana (23).

The number of active cases as of 8 am was 14,759. The number of the cured/discharged was 3,251, while one patient was listed as migrated.

As of today morning, the global number of the infected was at 24,75,841. More than 1.70 lakh people have died from the disease so far. The US, the one with the worst fatality rate by far, accounts for a bulk of these deaths at well over 42,500.
