More streaming guides
Streaming entertainment is bigger than ever, and with so many streaming services adding new shows and movies every week, it can be nearly impossible to sort the good from the bad. If you need something to watch and don’t want to wade through the digital muck that washes up on the internet’s shores, follow our picks below for the best new shows and movies to stream on Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Amazon, and other services.
On the list this week: The Mandalorian keeps hunting, The Crown returns for a new era, and more.
The Crown season 3
Netflix’s stately drama The Crown returns for a third season, moving into a new stage of Queen Elizabeth’s life with a new cast. Beginning in 1964, season 3 follows Queen Elizabeth II (Olivia Colman) as she and the rest of the royal family tend to their royal duties during an age of social upheaval. After 25 years on the throne, Elizabeth must confront not just Britain’s crumbling status on the world stage, but her own legacy. The Crown is as exquisite a period piece as ever, and Colman is the perfect successor to Claire Foy in the lead role.

Dollface season 1
After being dumped by her long-term boyfriend, Jules (Kat Dennings) tries to settle back into life as a single woman, only to realize she has not a friend in the world. Jules embarks on a surreal journey into the world of womanhood in an attempt to reconnect with her old friends and achieve self-actualization. Dollface has some trippy, comedic sequences built around Jules’ emotional turmoil, such as being put on trial for killing the vibe, a delightful approach reminiscent of the dearly departed comedy Man Seeking Woman.

Jordan Peele’s follow-up to Get Out is a wild tale about the haves and the have-nots, told through the lens of a home invasion story. The film follows the Wilsons — Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o), her husband Gabe (Winston Duke), and their children, Zora (Shahadi Wright Joseph) and Jason (Evan Alex) — a family heading to their lake house for vacation. The trip takes a grisly turn when another family shows up, a group of people who look exactly like them, and who have diabolical intentions.

The Mandalorian
If you haven’t yet taken the plunge and subscribed to Disney+, The Mandalorian might just convince you. The Star Wars series is set after the original trilogy, and follows a bounty hunter known only as the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal), whose assignments take him into the shadier corners of the galaxy. It’s a cool series, drawing upon classic Westerns like the Dollars trilogy, and an exciting treat for Star Wars fans. (It also features one of the cutest characters on television in years.)
