Auto sales in March fall 45% due to lockdown

New Delhi: Passenger vehicle sales in the local market reported its steepest decline falling by 51% to 143,014 units last month, as the nationwide lockdown to check the spread of the coronavirus pandemic hit production and dispatches.

According to data released by industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), sales of commercial vehicles dropped 88% to 13,027 units in the month under consideration. Those of two-wheelers declined 40% to 866,849 units. Automobile sales across categories crashed 45% to 1,050,367 units last month.

The sharp decline in wholesale last month dragged down overall volumes in the industry last fiscal year by 18% to 21,548,494 units. While sales of passenger vehicle sales last fiscal fell 17.82% to 2,775,679 units, those of commercial vehicles declined 28.75% to 717,688 units, Two-wheeler sales last fiscal dropped 17.76% to 17,417,616 units.
