Andrew Griggs was sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court

A man who murdered his pregnant wife and disposed of her body in 1999 has been jailed for a minimum of 20 years.

The body of Debbie Griggs, who disappeared without trace from the family home in Deal, Kent, on 5 May 1999, has never been found.

Jurors at Canterbury Crown Court rejected Andrew Griggs’s claims that his wife, then aged 34, had walked out on him and their three young sons.

Griggs, of St Leonards in Dorset, was convicted on Monday.

Sentencing Griggs to life in prison with a minimum of 20 years, His Honour Justice Robin Spencer said: “Only you know how you killed her and where you disposed of her body.”

He said it was likely Griggs had “dumped her body at sea,” adding that the keen sailor knew the coast “like the back of his hand”.

Mrs Grigg’s mother died of a “broken heart” in January just weeks before Griggs was charged, her father told the court.

“I know she longed to know where Debbie was,” Brian Cameron said.
