Tim Cook confirms Apple will unveil new Air products this week

What just happened? Apple CEO Tim Cook has confirmed that a new device is being added to the lineup of Air products this week. It’s suspected that the company is set to unveil new 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air models packing the latest M4 chips.

Cook’s post on X includes the text “This week” alongside a six-second video that states, one word at a time, “There’s something in the AIR.” An effect shows a shape slicing through the word AIR at the end.

In February, Mark Gurman, Bloomberg’s expert on all things Apple-related, predicted that the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air models with the M4 chip would arrive this month. He also highlighted how stock of the M3 MacBook Air was dwindling at Apple retail stores. The fact that Apple unveiled the M3-powered MacBook Air around this time last year further supports Gurman’s prediction.

Apple introduced the M4 chip in May 2024 in the seventh-generation iPad Pro. It’s since made its way to the Mac mini, iMac, and 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.

The MacBook Air is still waiting to receive the latest Apple silicon. Right now, the 13-inch version comes with either an M2 or M3 chip, while the 15-inch model offers only an M3 SoC. It’s likely that following the update, the M3 will only be available in one 13-inch MacBook Air configuration, while the rest of the lineup will feature the M4 chips.

According to a Geekbench leak, one of the biggest upgrades the M4 MacBook Air will have over the M3 version could be in the graphics department. The device notched up a Metal score of 54,806, much higher than the 41,045 points scored by the M3 MacBook Air.

As is usually the case, we’re not expecting any design changes in the new MacBook Air, but there could be some new color options. Buyers can currently pick from Midnight, Starlight, Space Grey, and Silver.

While new MacBook Air models are the most likely products Apple will be announcing, Gurman recently said Apple is winding down its iPad Air inventory, suggesting a new version of the tablet is also on the way – the most recent iPad Air models come with the M2 chip. There have also been reports of an ultra-thin iPhone Air, but that’s not expected until later this year at the earliest.
